GERMANTOWN, Md. (April 9, 2013) — The Washington Spirit have signed forward Jasmyne Spencer, finalizing the roster in advance of their National Women’s Soccer League season opener at the Boston Breakers on April 14, pending final league approval of required paperwork.

Spencer, whom the Boston Breakers chose in the fourth round of the NWSL Supplemental Draft earlier this year, will bring a scoring touch to the Spirit attack that she honed in college at Maryland and while playing overseas with the Danish club Brøndby.

The 22-year-old finished her career with the Terrapins ranked among the top 10 in school history for goals, points, shots and game-winning goals, and while in Denmark, she played in two UEFA Women’s Champions League Matches.

“We’re excited to see what Jasmyne will add to our offense,” Spirit coach Mike Jorden said. “She’s a very talented young player, and we expect her to be a valuable part of our attack as we begin NWSL play.”

In addition, the Spirit will be waiving defender Skyy Anderson as soon as Spencer’s contract paperwork is complete, keeping the team in compliance with the NWSL minimum roster requirements of 18.

The Spirit are composed of six players allocated from national teams: Americans Ali Krieger, Ashlyn Harris and Lori Lindsey; Canadians Robyn Gayle and Diana Matheson; and Mexico’s Teresa “Lupita” Worbis. The team added to its list of players with international experience by signing Canadian defender Candace Chapman.

Three players joined through the NWSL College Draft: Florida State forward Tiffany McCarty, Virginia forward Caroline Miller and Dayton midfielder Colleen Williams. Florida midfielder Holly King was also drafted and will join the franchise this week in hopes of earning a contract after rearranging her spring semester.

The Spirit added Stephanie Ochs and Tori Huster through the NWSL Supplemental Draft, then signed five more through the league’s free agent and discovery players process to round out the roster: Domenica Hodak, Kika Toulouse, Ingrid Wells, Julia Roberts and Chantel Jones. Additional signings are pending conclusion of the European playing seasons through May and June and will be announced as contracts are completed.

After beginning their season at Boston this Sunday, the Spirit will return to the D.C. area for their home opener on April 20 against the Western NY Flash and U.S. star Abby Wambach. The home side of the stadium at the Maryland SoccerPlex has nearly sold out for that match, but remaining tickets for that and all other home games can be purchased through tickets.washingtonspirit.com or by calling 301-337-8579.
