With seven matches remaining in the regular season, the Washington Spirit currently sits in second place in the NWSL and has the opportunity to secure its first playoff appearance since its 2021 NWSL Championship run with a win or draw against the Houston Dash on Sunday, September 15. Fans may not have to wait that long, though; the Spirit could clinch a spot as early as Friday depending on the results of other NWSL matches. Below, we break down all the clinching scenarios this weekend:
Friday
The Spirit could secure its spot in the playoff as early as Friday night if the North Carolina Courage wins or draws against Bay FC AND the Chicago Red Stars win or draw against the Portland Thorns.
Saturday
If the Courage wins or draws Friday, the Spirit could clinch a spot in the playoffs with a Racing Louisville win or draw against Angel City FC on Saturday night.
Sunday
Winning is the simplest path to the playoffs for the Spirit. Regardless of goal differential, a victory over the Houston Dash on Sunday, September 15 at Audi Field will lock in the Spirit’s playoff spot. A draw will also qualify the Spirit for the playoffs.
Monday
If the Spirit still haven’t clinched by Monday, a NJ/NY Gotham win or tie over the Seattle Reign will seal it if either Chicago or Louisville has already won or tied on Friday and Saturday, respectively.
