Boyds, Md. (9/3/20) – The Washington Spirit will face Sky Blue FC in the 2020 NWSL Fall Series opener on Saturday, September 5 at 1 pm ET, which will be broadcast live on CBS and CBS All Access.
We broke down some of the important stats from the Challenge Cup to keep in mind ahead of the Spirit’s first match back since last July.
Paige Nielsen successfully completed a total of 324 passes during the Challenge Cup. The centerback led the entire tournament with her 372 total passes attempted at the time of the Spirit’s exit from the cup, as well as leading with the highest number of passes attempted in a single game match with 112 against the Houston Dash. The 26-year-old wrapped the tournament with an 87.1% (324 of 371) passing rate.
With an 81.2%, the Washington Spirit was the team with the highest percentage of successful passes in the 2020 NWSL Challenge Cup. The team completed 1,854 out of the 2,283 passes they attempted throughout the four matches they played. Additionally, the Spirit were the only team to finish their run at the tournament with a successful passing rate above 80%.
During their time at the Challenge Cup, the Washington Spirit and Sky Blue had a combined total of 39 shots on target. Out of those 39, 27 were taken by the Spirit in five games and 12 were taken by Sky Blue in six games. The Spirit wrapped up the tournament with a conversion rate of 9.3% (4 of 43), while Sky Blue ended with a conversion rate of 11.4% (4 of 35).
With 38 fouls committed, the Spirit was the team that committed the least amount of fouls throughout their run at the Challenge Cup. On the contrary, the team with the highest number of fouls committed was the Chicago Red Stars who committed a total of 66 fouls. Furthermore, the Spirit were the only team to finish the tournament without receiving a single yellow card.
