The W-League announced its Team of the Week for Week 2 of the 2013 season on Tuesday, honoring the top players in league matches over the previous weekend. Spirit Reserves defender Meghan Cox and forward Ashley Herndon were both named to the elite eleven for their standout performances in Washington’s 2-0 win over the Virginia Beach Piranhas.
Previously, Washington Spirit Reserve midfielder Hayley Siegel earned Team of the Week accolades for her efforts in a 2-1 loss to the New York Magic on May 11th.
Anchoring the Spirit Reserves backline, central defender Cox held a dangerous Virginia Beach offense to only 2 shots in the first half. The Lee High School (Virginia) senior dominated the Washington defensive third and never allowed the Piranhas a sustainable attack for the entire match.
No stranger to the Maryland SoccerPlex, former DC United Women mainstay Herndon scored the ultimate game-winner on Saturday night in dramatic fashion. Collecting an errant pass near midfield, the Washington forward bolted through the Piranhas defense and blasted home her second goal of the season.
Herndon and Cox are both bound for James Madison University in the fall.
The Spirit Reserves make the short trip south next week to face the Fredericksburg Impact on Memorial Day Monday May 27th. Match time is set for 5:00 PM at the Fredericksburg Field House stadium. Washington returns home the following weekend to host the North Jersey Valkyries on Saturday June 1st at 4:00PM. That match will be held as a special event at Liberty High School in Bealeton, Virginia.
