Boyds, Md., (11/1/19) – Washington Spirit goalkeeper Aubrey Bledsoe has been named NWSL Goalkeeper of the Year for the first time in her career, after her league-leading season in 2019. The award was voted on by club officials, players, coaches, media and fans.
Bledsoe led the league in saves (86), recoveries (290), catches (25), and ranked second in the league for clean sheets (9). The 27-year-old goalkeeper started in every match for the Spirit and played 2,149 minutes in the net, while only conceding 25 goals with a save percentage of 77.5 percent.
Bledsoe had this to say on her win: “I think the level of goalkeeping this year especially was incredible and huge shout out to Kailen Sheridan and Casey Murphy. They were incredible this year. I’m honored just to be in the top three and to win it… yeah it’s exciting. I think it speaks a lot to the Spirit and the year that we had.”
Bledsoe also gave credit to the players in the Spirit defense, saying: “[It was] definitely a team effort this year, and speaks to how much we really enjoyed playing with each other. We really brought the best out of each other and just really enjoyed the group that we had this year.”
During her second season with the Spirit, Bledsoe was routinely recognized across the league for her reliability in the goal. Bledsoe was voted to the 2019 NWSL Best XI by fans, media, players and front office personnel. The Spirit shot-stopper was also named NWSL Player of the Week twice and earned the NWSL Save of the Week three times during 2019.
Bledsoe’s 2019 NWSL Goalkeeper of the Year crown continues her superb run of elite play, as she was also named the 2018-2019 W-League Goalkeeper of the Year while leading Sydney FC to their third Championship last winter. Bledsoe was named as a returning player to the Sky Blues on September 24.
