Boyds, Md. (4/12/19) – The Washington Spirit will face off against Sky Blue FC of New Jersey in their 2019 Home Opener during the NWSL’s opening weekend. Kick-off is scheduled for 7 p.m. EST, with gate D (Fan Zone) opening for all ticket-holding fans at 5:30 and Gate A opening at 6 p.m. EST.
The SoccerPlex will seem different to returning fans, as the gamedays have been revolutionized with the creation of the Fan Zone, a family-oriented area that will feature games like cornhole and jumbo-Jenga. In addition, the Spirit’s official mascot PK will also be making her first ever appearance at the SoccerPlex.
The Spirit have added four first-round draft picks, midfielder Jordan DiBiasi and defenders Tegan McGrady, Sam Staab and Dorian Bailey. In addition, the Spirit added two Australian internationals over the off-season in Chloe Logarzo and Amy Harrison to bolster the squad for 2019.
The Spirit will be at full strength to start the regular season as forward Mallory Pugh and midfielders Rose Lavelle and Andi Sullivan have returned from the United States Women’s National Team. The players participated in a set of friendlies against Australia and Belgium before the 2019 FIFA Women’s World Cup starts up over the summer.
Washington is unbeaten in their last seven matches against Sky Blue with five wins and three draws. The last three games between the two sides have been highly competitive, with all three fixtures all resulting in 1-1 draws. The matchup is expected to produce goals, as Sky Blue went 0-8-4 on the road last season and conceded an average of 2.5 goals per game.
Two of the NWSL’s top goalkeeping talents will be on display, as the Spirit’s Aubrey Bledsoe and Sky Blue’s Kailen Sheridan both recorded 108 saves last season, which is an NWSL record for most saves in a single season.
