Boyds, MD (August 30, 2018) – The Washington Spirit has signed six National Team Replacement Players ahead of Saturday’s season finale against Sky Blue FC.
With eight Spirit players scheduled to miss the game due to international duty, the club has signed Brenna Connell, Zoe Clark, Megan Crosson, Tiffany McCarty, Alexa Newfield and Morgan Ruhl as National Team Replacement Players, pending league approval.
The Spirit players missing Saturday’s match will include: forward/midfielder Estefanía Banini (ARG), forward/defender Mallory Eubanks (USA U-23), goalkeeper DiDi Haracic (BIH), forward Ashley Hatch (USA U-23), midfielder Rose Lavelle (USA), forward Mallory Pugh (USA), defender/midfielder Rebecca Quinn (CAN) and midfielder Andi Sullivan (USA U-23).
Connell, 24, is a native of Olney, Md. and a former standout midfielder for George Mason University. She has represented the Washington Spirit Reserves during their second and third straight undefeated regular seasons in the 2017 and 2018 WPSL campaigns.
Clark played four seasons of college soccer for the University of California – Berkeley before being granted a fifth year of NCAA eligibility and transferring to the University of Maryland for her final season in 2017. She is a former U.S. Youth National Team pool player with success at the college level as a defender and in the midfield.
Crosson, a 24-year-old defender from Santa Clara University, began her professional career with the NWSL’s Houston Dash in 2016, making four appearances, and in 2017 she joined Japan’s top league with Speranza FC. Most recently, Crosson played for Spanish club UD Granadilla Tenerife.
McCarty returns to the Spirit having represented the club during the inaugural 2013 NWSL season, when she played in 21 games, scoring two goals. She has scored nine career goals in the NWSL, including five for the Houston Dash from 2014-2015, and two for FC Kansas City in 2016. McCarty now joins the Spirit from Medkila IL in Norway’s top division.
Newfield is a 26-year-old forward also with NWSL experience, having appeared in 25 games while scoring two goals with FC Kansas City from 2016-2017. She made the inaugural Utah Royals FC roster in 2018, and was recently released on July 19.
Ruhl is a former LSU goalkeeper and a current assistant coach for the Loyola University Maryland women’s soccer program as well as goalkeepers coach for the Spirit’s U.S. Soccer Development Academy program in Maryland. A native of Hereford, Md., Ruhl is a former U.S. Youth National Team pool player and was a standout for national prep soccer powerhouse The McDonogh School.
