Los Angeles, Calif. (08/15/2026) – The Washington Spirit will hit the road looking to return to its winning ways in a matchup with Angel City FC this weekend. Across the past three thrilling meetings between the Spirit and Angel City, the sides are even at 1-1-1 and seven goals apiece. Kicking off at 9 p.m. EDT on Sunday, August 16, the match will air on ESPN.
The Spirit
Washington heads into Sunday’s contest coming off back-to-back losses, just the third time since September 2023 that the club has lost two in a row. Despite last weekend’s result, the Spirit put together a strong second half at Audi Field, coming back from a 0-3 deficit to equalize in the 90th minute. Forwards Trinity Rodman and Sofia Cantore and midfielder Rebeca Bernal tallied Washington’s three goals.
Rodman’s goal last weekend was her ninth of the regular season, setting a new single season career high. The goal also marked the forward’s 60th career regular season goal contribution, making her the youngest player in NWSL history to reach the mark as she now has 37 goals and 23 assists since entering the league in 2021. Cantore’s goal was also the ninth of her NWSL career and 11th in a Spirit kit since making her debut for the club last August.
Sunday night’s match between the Spirit and Angel City will be the first meeting between the sides in nearly 11 months since last September when the teams battled to a 2-2 draw, the first tie in the series’ history. After Angel City swept the first season’s meetings in 2022, Washington took four straight in 2023 and 2024 before last season’s loss and draw. This series has been tightly contested with only one meeting in the eight-match series seeing a margin of victory of more than one goal. The last five meetings have seen a combined 23 total goals as well for an average of 4.6 per match.
Thought the Spirit has dropped two in a row, it can recapture its spot in the top two on the table with any points on Sunday as it is currently tied with Utah Royals FC at 36 points and a +12 goal differential but Washington has a match in hand. Following Sunday night’s match, the Spirit will return home to host the Orlando Pride on Sunday, August 23 at Audi Field. Kicking off at 4 p.m. EDT, the match’s theme will be Love is Loud: Pride.
The Opponent
Angel City has been in strong form since returning from the league-wide June break, earning at least a point in five of its six matches with three wins and two draws. The Los Angeles-based side took an impressive 2-0 shutout win on the road against its southern California rival San Diego Wave FC as well during this span, before earning another road win at Chicago and road draws with Kansas City and Seattle.
Angel City has outshot opponents 105-77 since the return to play last month, a wider margin than any other club in the NWSL across that time frame. The side leads the Spirit in total shots this season as well, though it trails in shots on target and rate of possession. Washington will need to limit all looks on frame for Angel City this weekend if it wants to get back into the win column.
Across the first eight matches of the Spirit-Angel City series, nine different players have scored a goal for LA. Led by Riley Tiernan’s two goals, both scored in Angel City’s win in DC last May, eight players have tallied a single goal in the fixture, showcasing a balanced attack from the club. Angel City has benefited from two own goals by the Spirit since 2022 as well. In contrast, three Spirit players have recorded multiple goals in this series: Ashley Hatch (4), Trinity Rodman (3) and Esme Morgan (2).
Following this weekend’s matchup, Angel City FC will remain home to host Gotham FC on Sunday, August 23 at 8 p.m. EDT.
All-Time Series History
The Spirit holds a 4-3-1 all-time record against Angel City FC with a +2 goal differential (15-13). In the last meeting between Washington and LA in September 2025, the sides settled for a point apiece after a 2-2 draw. After dropping the first two installments of the series in 2022, the Spirit rattled off four straight wins over Angel City, sweeping the 2023 and 2024 matchups. Last season, Washington tallied a loss and a draw in two meetings with Angel City.
