Washington, D.C. (09/16/2022) – The Washington Spirit will take on northeast rival NJ/NY Gotham FC on Saturday night in the defending champs’ penultimate home match of 2022.

The Spirit will play at Audi Field for the second time in as many weeks on Saturday night as NJ/NY Gotham FC prepares for its first-ever regular season match in the nation’s capital. Washington will welcome six former Spirit players back to town this weekend as well. The Spirit is coming off its best offensive performance of the regular season after putting up four goals in its last time out. The output marked the first four-goal match for the Washington attack since an early April Challenge Cup bout with Orlando at Audi Field. Even after defender Julia Roddar returned to action last week, the Spirit again finds itself without a key piece of its defending third. Fresh off her first career brace, Amber Brooks will miss Saturday night’s match due to yellow card accumulation as she earned her fifth against San Diego. Already missing defenders Emily Sonnett and Kelley O’Hara, the Spirit will need big performances from its second line.

Washington remains alive in the playoff race heading into its bout with Gotham FC as well. Being 12 points behind the playoff line, the Spirit must win each of its remaining four matches and have OL Reign lose each of its remaining four in addition to a substantial amount of other help around the league to have a chance to defend its 2021 title in the postseason. This 2022 Gotham FC side has the most losses and fewest draws in the NWSL this season in addition to the fewest goals scored (13), most goals against (37) and worst goal differential (-24). Washington’s attacking third will look to make the most of its offensive opportunities Saturday night to remain alive for the postseason for at least another day and improve its goal differential standing in case of a tiebreaking scenario at the regular season’s end.

The match will be broadcast on Twitch for fans in the United States and international viewers. Following the match, the Spirit will host a press conference with interim head coach Albertin Montoya and two players. Fans can stream the postgame presser via the Washington Spirit Twitch channel.
