Leesburg, Va., (02/15/2021) – Washington Spirit forward Averie Collins will miss the start of the 2021 NWSL season with a torn anterior cruciate ligament suffered in a voluntary training session in late January.
The injury occurred during a match-play situation but was the result of a non-contact play. Collins was taken to Inova Sports Medicine for an MRI where it was revealed that the ligament was torn. Collins underwent successful surgery on Wednesday, February 3, and will be out indefinitely.
Head Coach Richie Burke had this to say on Averie Collins: “I’ve chatted with club Doctor Brandon Bryant about Averie’s reparative surgery and he was very pleased with the ACL graft and more so that there was no other damage to meniscus or MCL. That was certainly positive news after the disappointment of the injury. Prior to the season, Averie had put so much work in to prepare for preseason and she looked very sharp in our voluntary workout sessions. She was absolutely flying and I was really excited for her going into her second year with the club. I’m glad we made the decision to extend her contract for two years and believe she’ll be back a stronger player in the future. Can’t wait to see her back in a Spirit uniform.”
