Boyds, MD., (6/26/2020) – The Washington Spirit today announced a number of new community partnerships for 2020. The club’s support of these organizations will include monetary donations for every goal, shutout and victory the Spirit achieve during the 2020 NWSL Challenge Cup. The Spirit kick off tomorrow, June 27 at Zions Bank Stadium in Herriman, UT against the Chicago Red Stars.
The new Spirit community partners for 2020 include:
- Youth Leadership Foundation (YLF)
- Comfort Cases
- Kids Enjoy Exercise Now Greater DC-Baltimore (KEEN)
- Teens Run DC (TRDC)
YLF was founded by Edward Smith, the first African American tenured professor at American University, in 1997. The organization provides mentoring and educational programs to predominantly African American children in the DC area. The program has seen 97% of the kids that participate in YLF graduate high school and 80% graduate college.
Rob and Reece Scheer founded Comfort Cases in 2013, and have since delivered over 75,000 Comfort Cases to children who have transitioned into foster care. The organization provides children currently in foster care a special bag of comforting items such as a blanket, pajamas, and stuffed animals. Comfort Cases aims to inspire communities to bring dignity and hope to youth in foster care.
Founded by Elliott and Estee Portnoy in 1992, Greater DC-Baltimore KEEN empowers kids with disabilities by providing free, non-competitive, one-to-one programs of exercise, fitness and fun, led by volunteer coaches. Currently, KEEN Greater DC-Baltimore provides more than 1,300 program hours each month to over 500 children, teens and young adults with significant developmental and physical disabilities.
TRDC was founded in 2009. The organization empowers underserved youth to envision and work towards the achievement of personal goals through a youth mentoring and distance running program. Since its inception, TRDC has grown to serve 450 middle and high school students throughout the District of Columbia.
The Spirit will also continue our partnerships with St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, Children’s National Hospital, and DC Scores. Each of these partners will also receive donations from our NWSL Challenge Cup program.
“I want to thank CVS Health for supporting this work by our club,” said Spirit owner Steve Baldwin. “Our players approached me with the idea of setting up the donation program and CVS Health supported the initiative by targeting a portion of their sponsorship with us for these partners. Of particular importance to our players was serving the black community and serving kids. I’m so proud of our players, and everyone with the Spirit is excited about making a difference in our community.”
