Spirit will face LIGA MX Femenil’s Chivas de Guadalajara, NWSL’s NJ/NY Gotham FC and Chicago Red Stars in Group D 

 

Washington, D.C. (03/20/2024) – The Washington Spirit has released its 2024 NWSL x LIGA MX Femenil Summer Cup fixtures, the club announced today. Washington will take on LIGA MX’s Chivas de Guadalajara and the NWSL’s NJ/NY Gotham FC and Chicago Red Stars in Group D action in late July. The Spirit’s 2024 schedule can be found in its entirety, HERE. 

 

This summer’s NWSL x LIGA MX Femenil Summer Cup will be the first of its kind in the NWSL. Taking place during the 2024 Summer Olympic Games window, this season’s competition is set to be the NWSL’s first-ever international club tournament. All 14 NWSL clubs and LIGA MX’s top six finishers will go head-to-head across five groups of four clubs. Following the three-match group stage schedule, the top four teams will advance to the semifinal round taking place the first weekend of August. This round’s winners will face off in the championship match the final weekend of October. 

 

The Spirit will be the designated home team in its first and final Group D matches, only being the visiting team for the club’s match on Sunday, July 28. Welcoming Chivas de Guadalajara from central Mexico to kick off group play on Sunday, July 21, the Spirit will play its first international club ever. Established in 2016, Chivas de Guadalajara Femenil has already accumulated an impressive list of accolades. The club won the Apertura Tournament in its first full season of existence (2017) and won both the Clausura Tournament and Champion of Champions Tournament in 2022. Washington will also add to its storied history of matchups with NWSL opponents NJ/NY Gotham FC and the Chicago Red Stars, the two most-played fixtures in Spirit history at 36 and 30 times, respectively.

  • Sunday, July 21, 5 p.m. EDT – vs. Chivas de Guadalajara, Venue TBD 
  • Sunday, July 28, 5 p.m. EDT – vs. NJ/NY Gotham FC, Venue TBD 
  • Wednesday, July 31, 7:30 p.m. EDT – vs. Chicago Red Stars, Venue TBD 

 

The Washington Spirit will announce match venues for all three group stage matches once confirmed. Single match tickets will go on sale at that time.
