Morgan and England to face the United States and Switzerland in two home friendlies
Washington, D.C. (11/19/2024) – Washington Spirit defender Esme Morgan has been called up to the England Women’s senior team, England Football announced today.
Originally from Sheffield, England, Morgan has appeared in nine international matches for the England senior team, making her debut for the squad in November 2022. The standout defender was named to England’s final roster for the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup in Australia in New Zealand for her first major tournament.

Morgan has appeared in eight matches for the Spirit since joining the side this summer, playing 674 minutes across the regular season and playoffs, including 120 minutes and 105 minutes in the Spirit’s quarterfinal and semifinal matches, respectively. Prior to her move to DC, she played for Manchester City in the English Women’s Super League. Morgan began her professional career with Manchester City and made her debut with the senior team in September 2017 at just 16 years old. In the seven English WSL seasons since her debut, Morgan appeared in 64 matches, tallying nearly 5,000 minutes of playing time in the process.
The Spirit will take the field for the final time this year on Saturday night in the 2024 NWSL Championship. The team won back-to-back thrillers in front of sellout crowds at Audi Field, taking down Bay FC after extra time and knocking off defending champion NJ/NY Gotham FC in penalty kicks to earn a berth in this season’s title match. Kicking off at 8 p.m. EST on CBS, the Spirit will face the top-seeded Orlando Pride.
