Getting to Know Midfielder Leicy Santos

Washington Spirit  |   October 30, 2024

Leicy Santos is one of the newest Washington Spirit players, joining the team following the conclusion of the 2024 Olympic Games where she represented the Colombian National Team. In her first six games with the Spirit, Santos scored two goals and added one assist. In her debut on August 25, she became the fifth player in NWSL history to record a goal and an assist in a debut. Two weeks later, she netted a game-winning goal in the sixth minute of second half stoppage time against Portland Thorns FC. Santos is originally from San Sebastián within the town of Lorica, Colombia and came to the Spirit after several successful seasons at Atlético Madrid.

Who is your favorite athlete?
(Lionel) Messi. He’s always been my favorite because ever since I was little, we would watch Argentina play. This was because my father enjoyed watching Argentina play. I still remember his debut at the 2006 World Cup. But I admire Aitana Bonmatí a lot for the way she plays and her spirit to always win.

You get to choose the menu for one last meal. What would it be?
Easy. Coconut rice with a typical Colombian fried fish called Bocachico and Patacones. That’s it. Simple.

Is there a story behind your jersey number?
I chose my jersey number to be #10 Because of the history of soccer and the history of those who wore #10. I come from a country where we love soccer so much and, in Colombia, they reference players who wear #10 like ‘El Pibe’ (Carlos Valderrama) and James Rodriguez, so I wanted to have the number that references great players and great soccer.

What career highlight are you most proud of?
Probably my goal against England at the 2023 World Cup. It might not be my most important goal but it was my first goal at a World Cup and that was so special to me. It also opened my mind that I can accomplish anything in the world of soccer… and, of course, it was a great time for the Colombian team. If I had to choose another moment, it would be the final I played with Santa Fe, my first pro team in Colombia, because we became champions and made history.

What is your favorite type of music or band?
I don’t have one, and I don’t have a favorite genre, but I guess I can say my current favorite artist Karol G. I can listen to her all the time, but I love all types of music. Karol G is the queen, though. She is from Colombia.

What is your favorite drink?
This one is easy. Coffee. It’s coffee because the coffee culture in Colombia means so much. We are proud of the coffee that is made in Colombia.

What is your favorite movie?
I don’t have one. I prefer to listen to music or study. I only turn on the TV to watch soccer.

What is the favorite place you have traveled to, excluding Colombia?
Spain because they have everything: The people are nice, the food is good, it has great weather. Madrid is probably my favorite part of Spain because I lived there and because it offers so much to those that visit it.
