Germantown, Maryland native extends her time with hometown team

Washington, D.C. (09/13/2024) – The Washington Spirit has signed rookie Makenna Morris to a new one-year contract through the 2025 season, the club announced today. Morris joined the Spirit on a one-year deal earlier this year after being selected with the 13th overall pick in the 2024 NWSL Draft.

“Makenna has been a valuable piece of this year’s Spirit team, having significant impact across different positions,” said President of Soccer Operations/General Manager Mark Krikorian. “The versatility she brings to the pitch is very important to the way this team plays.”

To date, Morris has appeared in nine matches and made four starts for the Spirit across all competitions. Playing a variety of positions across the pitch, Morris’ versatility has made her an asset for the Spirit. In her first career start on July 6 against Bay FC, Morris tallied her first goal, assist and drawn penalty, contributing to all three Spirit scores in the 3-0 victory. She became the first player to accomplish that feat in Spirit history.

“I’m thrilled to re-sign with the Spirit,” said Morris. “It’s been a blessing to learn and grow as a player under this staff and this group of players and I’m excited to have the opportunity to keep working hard and growing. DC is home and I can’t wait to continue to play in front of the best fans.”

A Germantown, Maryland native, Morris came to the Spirit by way of Clemson University. In four seasons with the Tigers, Morris appeared in 80 games, starting in all but three and scoring 19 goals and adding 20 assists. In 2023, Morris led the Tigers squad with 26 points. Morris’ other honors include Second Team All-ACC (2020), Third Team All-ACC (2021) and ACC All-Freshman (2020) honors. Morris played with Spirit midfielder Hal Hershfelt at Clemson for four years.

Prior to college, the DMV local played for both Bethesda Soccer Club and McLean ECNL, Spirit Alliance Partnership Program teams, and attended St. John’s College High School in Washington, D.C.

Morris and the Spirit will take to the pitch next at home against the Houston Dash on Sunday, September 15. Kicking off at 1 p.m. EDT, this weekend’s blackout match will feature a CVS Health rally towel giveaway. Tickets to Sunday’s match are available here.
