The midfielder will represent Ireland in its first-ever FIFA Women’s World Cup appearance
Washington, D.C. (06/28/2023) – Washington Spirit midfielder Marissa Sheva has been called up to the Ireland Women’s National Football Team for the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup, Ireland Football announced today.
Sheva earned her first call-up to the Ireland senior national team in February, making her international debut on February 22 in a friendly against China. Playing as a forward for Ireland, Sheva started both of the country’s friendlies against the United States in early April. Since joining the Spirit in 2022, Sheva has made 21 total appearances with the side, tallying one goal and 808 minutes of action across all competitions.
As part of Group B, Ireland will take on host nation Australia in addition to Canada and Nigeria in the group stage of this summer’s World Cup. The first-time World Cup participants will kick off their debut in Australia, playing group stage matches in Sydney, Perth and Brisbane:
Should Ireland place in the top two of Group B, the team will advance to the knockout stage, which features a 16-team single elimination bracket.
Sheva spent time with Deportivo Alavés Gloriosas of Spain’s Segunda División Pro and Utah Royals FC of the NWSL in 2020 before joining the Spirit in 2022. Prior to her professional career, Sheva played four seasons of college soccer at Penn State, tallying 13 goals and nine assists over 92 appearances with the Nittany Lions.
The Spirit’s next home match will be on Saturday, July 1 when the team takes on the Orlando Pride. The club announced earlier this offseason that all 14 home matches will be played for the first time at Audi Field in Buzzard Point, ensuring players and fans alike access to a facility befitting a professional club. Fans can secure tickets now to all remaining 2023 home matches with a prorated season membership. Available here, the season membership grants fans access to priority seating, an exclusive Trinity Rodman bobblehead, invitations to special events throughout the season and more. Single game tickets are also on sale now.
