Canada is set to face France in an international friendly ahead of this summer’s World Cup
Washington, D.C. (03/29/2023) – Washington Spirit defender Gabrielle Carle has been called up to the Canadian Women’s National Team, Canada Soccer announced today.
Carle, who signed a two-year contract with the Spirit last December, has represented Canada in over 30 matches including during the 2019 FIFA Women’s World Cup. Carle was an alternate for the Tokyo Olympic Games in 2021 and made her debut in the Canadian national youth program in 2013 at 14 years old. She hails from Lévis, Quebec.
The Canadian Women’s National Team will play France in a friendly matchup held in Le Mans, France on April 11. The Canadian squad is coming off an appearance in the 2023 SheBelieves Cup and is set to take open its 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup campaign on July 21 against Nigeria as part of Group B.
Before joining the Spirit, Carle played one year of professional soccer with Kristianstads DFF of the Damallsvenskan, the highest division of women’s soccer in Sweden. There, she logged nearly 1,900 minutes in 22 matches, scoring two goals and adding one assist. Prior to playing professional soccer, Carle was a two-time national champion (2018, 2021) under current Spirit President of Soccer Operations/General Manager Mark Krikorian at Florida State and was a part of a 2021 Seminole backline that allowed only 13 goals in 25 games.
