Kansas City, Kan. (09/24/2022) – The Washington Spirit will take the pitch at Children’s Mercy Park for the first time on Sunday afternoon as it takes on the Kansas City Current in its final away match of the season.
Returning from a two-match absence due to yellow card accumulation and a suspension, defender Amber Brooks will help bolster a Spirit defending third that ceded two goals to Angel City in a span of 12 minutes Wednesday night. Also off the availability report is captain Andi Sullivan who was listed as questionable with a knee injury last time out. Sullivan played 45 minutes in Los Angeles and is expected to see more time on Sunday. Forward Ashley Hatch is fresh off scoring her ninth goal in 16 regular season matches and will look to equal her 2021 Golden Boot-winning ten-goal output against the Current.
Kansas City currently sits at fifth in the table and can clinch a playoff berth with a win on Sunday afternoon. If the Current is able to reach the postseason this year, it would be the first time for a Kansas City-based club since 2015. In addition to season-ending right leg injuries to forward Lynn Williams, midfielder Sam Mewis and forward Mallory Weber, the Current will be without forward Jaycie Johnson who also has a right leg injury. Despite still being in the running for the 2022 NWSL Shield, Kansas City has a -2 goal differential through 20 matches this year and is the only side above ninth in the table to have allowed more goals than it has scored.
The match will be broadcast on Paramount+ for fans in the United States and on Twitch for international viewers. Following the match, the Spirit will host a press conference with interim head coach Albertin Montoya and two players. Fans can stream the postgame presser via the Washington Spirit Twitch channel.
