Nguyen agreed to terms with Vietnamese club Ho Chi Minh City FC
Washington, D.C. (08/06/2022) – Washington Spirit assistant coach Lee Nguyen is coming out of retirement and will return to his former club in Vietnam this month, Nguyen announced this week.
After retiring from the pitch last season, Nguyen joined Kris Ward’s coaching staff with the Spirit last October before re-signing with the club in February. Prior to beginning his coaching career, Nguyen played professionally for 15 years in the Netherlands, Denmark, Vietnam and the United States, making 326 career appearances. Over Nguyen’s seven seasons with the New England Revolution of MLS, he tallied 51 of his 71 career goals.
Returning to Ho Chi Minh City FC, with which he played last year, Nguyen will again compete in V.League 1, Vietnam’s top-tier soccer league. Nguyen will also be the oldest player on the Ho Chi Minh City FC roster, as he turns 36 this fall.
Last night’s road match against Racing Louisville FC was Nguyen’s final with the Spirit. Next week, the Spirit returns home to host Portland Thorns FC at Segra Field on Wednesday, August 10.
