Boyds, Md., (1/6/20) – Two Spirit players were in action this week for round 8 of the Australian W-League, with Perth Glory forward Crystal Thomas and Western Sydney Wanderers defender Sam Staab both seeing action over the weekend.
Spirit and Perth Glory forward Thomas scored a stunning single goal against Adelaide United, launching her side into a
two-goal comeback and earning a hard-fought draw and much-needed point. Thomas also earned a goal of the week nomination for the effort.
Glory coach Bobby Despotovski said this on Thomas’s performance to w-league.com, “Crystal’s goal got us back into it and we pushed right to the end… I’m so pleased for the girls that they got something out of the game, having worked so tirelessly.”
Meanwhile, on the Gold Coast, Staab and the Western Sydney Wanderers had the weekend off from the W League, facing off against the Chinese Women’s National Team in an international friendly. The Wanderers earned a hard-fought 1-0 victory against the 15th-ranked Chinese side. Staab lead the Red and Black backline to its third straight clean sheet in all competitions, also remaining undefeated in all competitions this season.
Goalkeeper Audrey Bledsoe and Sydney F.C. were slated to be in action this week but had their match against Canberra United postponed due to the hazardous air quality from the devastating bushfires in the region. An announcement when the match will be rescheduled will be made at a later date.
Sam Staab and the Red and Black have a match against 5th place Brisbane Roar at Marconi Stadium on Sunday at 12am ET on ESPN +.
Thomas and the Glory have the week off, and will face off against Staab and the league-leading
West Sydney Wanderers in round 10. Bledsoe and Sydney F.C. have a bye this upcoming round and will play against the Brisbane Roar in round 10.
