Boyds, Md., (6/24/19) – Spirit midfielder Rose Lavelle earned her third start of the 2019 Women’s World Cup and played 88 minutes as the United States overcame a challenge from Spain in the round of 16 on Monday in Reims, France.
The match was Lavelle’s third of the tournament, with all three appearances coming via a place in the Americans’ starting lineup. After playing 57 and 63 minutes in her first two games, she earned her longest outing so far as the U.S. picked up a 2-1 victory at Stade Auguste-Delaune.
Before being replaced by Lindsey Horan in the 89th minute, Lavelle was a key cog in the U.S. midfield, and factored into one of the critical moments of the game when she drew the game-winning penalty kick in the 71st minute. While chasing down a loose ball in the box, Lavelle went to ground following contact from a Spain defender. The penalty kick was upheld by a VAR review, and Megan Rapinoe converted from the spot to give the U.S. a 2-1 lead.
With the win, the U.S. advanced to a quarterfinal showdown on Friday against France at Parc des Princes in Paris. Lavelle and Spirit forward Mallory Pugh will look to continue their contributions to the team’s quest for a world title.
