Boyds, Md. (October 10, 2018) – Washington Spirit midfielder Rose Lavelle scored two goals within a three-minute span near the end of the first half of Wednesday night’s Group A finale for the U.S. Women’s National Team at the Concacaf Women’s Championship, as the USA sailed to a 7-0 victory over Trinidad & Tobago.
With the win, the USA finished group play in the World Cup Qualifying event with a perfect 3-0-0 record, 18 goals scored and none allowed, and a first place finish in Group A accompanying a trip to the semifinals.
Lavelle earned a spot in Jill Ellis‘ starting lineup and shined once again on the bright stage, following up her second career assist which came on Sunday against Panama, with her first career brace on Wednesday against Trinidad & Tobago. She now has five goals through just 16 international appearances.
Spirit forward Mallory Pugh also saw 20 minutes of action, entering the match in the 70th minute as the USA successfully closed out a rain-soaked night at WakeMed Soccer Park in Cary, N.C.
Lavelle’s first goal of the evening came on a powerful strike from distance in the 41st minute. Tobin Heath played a short pass to Lavelle, who crushed her left-footed shot just inside the left post from about 33 yards out.

In the 43rd minute, Lavelle followed up almost immediately with an unassisted goal from inside the box after she recovered a loose ball. Lavelle won the race to the ball sent into the box by Megan Rapinoe – originally intended for Alex Morgan – and the 23-year-old midfielder finished with precision from close range as she was being taken down by a T&T defender.
