Boyds, MD (Sept. 28, 2017) – Saturday night will mark the conclusion of the 2017 National Women’s Soccer League season for the Washington Spirit and Seattle Reign FC, as the sides face off at the Maryland SoccerPlex for the only time this year. [TICKETS]
The Spirit will aim to finish the season on a high note and even up its September record with a bounceback win against Seattle, coming off last weekend’s loss to the Boston Breakers. Washington is 1-2-0 through its first three games of the month, highlighted by a 2-1 second half comeback victory on the road against Sky Blue FC on September 10.
“We look forward to the challenge that Seattle presents in our final home match of the season,” said Spirit head coach and general manager Jim Gabarra. “Games against Seattle are always entertaining because both teams play an entertaining style of soccer.”
Reign FC took the first leg of the two-game season series against the Spirit back on May 13 at Memorial Stadium in Seattle. However, Washington has an edge at home in the all-time series, winning three of five meetings.
Washington’s attack will look to rebound from a scoreless game against Boston last Saturday, when the team was shutout at home for the first time since May 20. Havana Solaun and Cheyna Williams enter the final game of the season tied for the team lead in goals with five each, closely followed by U.S. international Mallory Pugh with four goals in her rookie campaign. Nigerian international Francisca Ordega has also found the net four times, but will miss Saturday’s finale due to injury.
Seattle was also held scoreless in its most recent game, a 1-0 loss to FC Kansas City on Sept. 24, which snapped a 28-game home scoring streak and eliminated Reign FC from playoff contention.
Containing Seattle’s No. 2 ranked scoring offense will be a major key for the Spirit on Saturday night. Reign FC is one of just two teams to reach 40 goals scored entering the final weekend of the regular season, behind only Orlando Pride’s 42.
U.S. international Megan Rapinoe is tied for second among the league’s scoring leaders with 12 on the season, followed by Japanese international Nahomi Kawasumi with six goals and U.S. international Jessica Fishlock with five.
Following Saturday’s 2017 finale, season tickets for the 2018 Washington Spirit season will be available starting on Tuesday, October 3.
