The Washington Spirit will face the Houston Dash Monday May 26 at 4 pm at the Maryland SoccerPlex in Boyds. Md. This will be the first time the two teams play each other this season. The Spirit enter the match at 3-4-1, while the Dash come in at 1-6-1.
The Spirit tied with Sky Blue FC 3-3 earlier in the week. Down by two goals in the second half, the Spirit were fortunate to get a 90th minute penalty kick, which Diana Matheson converted for the tie. With goals from Robyn Gayle, Lori Lindsey and Matheson, the Spirit were able to gain a point, bringing their season total to 10 and holding their No. 6 position in the standings.
The Houston Dash are coming off a 3-1 home loss to the Chicago Red Stars on Friday night. The Dash currently hold the 8th spot in the standings with 4 points, one more than the last place Boston Breakers.
Look for the Spirit to continue to build their attack against the Dash after scoring three goals in each of their last two games. Jodie Taylor will look to build on her break out performance against Western New York last weekend, while the rest of the Spirit team proved against Sky Blue how versatile their attack can be.
On the other side of the ball, the Spirit will look to put together a complete game. After conceding goals immediately on the heels of scoring in their past three games, the Spirit will look to hold the Dash scoreless as Ashlyn Harris looks to get her second shutout of the season.
“Today will be an exciting game with two teams ready to play great football,” said head coach Mark Parsons. “It will be our last time in front of our amazing home fans for a while and I know the players are pumped to put in a strong performance for them.”
The Spirit have the opportunity to bring their record to .500 for the third time this season. This Memorial Day match will be the only game the Spirit play on a Monday this season.
