Put the boarding passes and luggage away. The Washington Spirit are back at home for good to conclude the inaugural NWSL season. With three games on Maureen Hendricks Field at Maryland SoccerPlex over the season’s final 11 days, the Spirit intend to show off the best atmosphere in the league, take on the role of spoiler, end the year on a high note and build momentum heading into the offseason.
It all starts Wednesday (7:30 p.m. ET) when the Spirit welcome the Chicago Red Stars (7-7-5, 26 points), who are intent on making a late charge into playoff position. Chicago, which received two goals from German forward Inka Grings in a win over Seattle last weekend, is sitting in fifth place, one spot out of the postseason-bound top four. The match might be the last chance for Washington fans to see the Spirit (1-14-4, 7 points) in person as the final two matches of the year could both sell out before game day.
After hosting the Red Stars, the Spirit will return to national television and look to claim their season series with Seattle Reign FC (5-11-3, 18 points) on FOX Soccer (Saturday, 7 p.m. ET). U.S. goalkeeper Hope Solo and the Reign got the best of Washington, 2-1, in Seattle on July 14 in the NWSL debut on FOX Soccer. But having recorded their lone victory of the season over the Reign, the Spirit are anxious to come out on top in the teams’ first East Coast meeting.
Sky Blue FC (10-6-4, 34 points), which is battling for a top-two position in the NWSL standings – crucial to earn a home playoff date – will close out the season against the Spirit on Sunday, Aug. 18 (5 p.m. ET).
