– Washington Spirit vs. FC Kansas City LIVE STREAM – 4:10 p.m. ET –
BOYDS, Md. (June 21, 2013) – The Washington Spirit head back out on the road looking to end a three-game skid in their inaugural clash with FC Kansas City at Shawnee Mission North HS, on Sunday, June 23, at 4:10 p.m. ET. The match will be shown via live stream on the NSWL YouTube channel.
The Spirit (1-5-3, 6 points) are in the midst of five out of six matches away from Maryland SoccerPlex, a stretch that began with the first win in franchise history, a 4-2 triumph over the Seattle Reign FC on May 16. But the First Ladies haven’t been able to find the back of the net since, losing three straight by shutout, the latest a 2-0 defeat to the Western New York Flash on June 15.
Washington is looking for its offensive fortunes to change with newly acquired German striker Conny Pohlers available for selection this weekend. Pohlers, who has joined the Spirit on loan, trained for the first time with the team on Wednesday following a three-week breaking after helping her home club, VfL Wolfsburg, capture its first UEFA Women’s Championship. She declared herself fit despite the layoff.
“I needed this break, but three weeks is enough,” Pohlers said. “Now I am happy that I have a ball at my feet.”
The Spirit also welcomed U.S. U-23 Women’s National Team defender Toni Pressley last weekend, as she made her debut with a 90-minute effort on the back line against the Flash. Pressley signed with club on June 3, coming from Russian club Ryazan VDV.
In addition to the new faces, the Spirit are looking forward to having their U.S. and Canadian national team members back from international duty for the first time since late May. U.S. defender Ali Krieger will available after playing 20 minutes off the bench in the first of two friendly victories over South Korea.
Canadian midfielder Diana Matheson will miss Sunday’s match after suffering an ankle injury in a 1-0 loss against Germany in Paderborn, Ger., on Thursday. Defender Robyn Gayle saw limited action off the bench against the Germans and will be available.
The Spirit will also be without midfielder Teresa “Lupita” Worbis (ankle sprain) and forward Caroline Miller (ankle fracture).
FC Kansas City (5-4-1, 16 points) is coming off its first loss in three matches, a 3-1 home defeat to the Chicago Red Stars on June 16, and is looking to maintain its spot among the top four in the NWSL. The squad will also get a boost from returning U.S. and Canadian national team players, including captain and U.S. center back Becky Sauerbrunn and Canadian center back Lauren Sesselmann. U.S. goalkeeper Nicole Barnhart (four shutouts) and midfielders Lauren Cheney and Kristie Mewis will also be back for the ‘Blues.’
