BOYDS, Md (Sept 29, 2016) – The Washington Spirit will present 2016 U.S. Paralympic 7-a-side soccer team member Josh Brunais as Honorary Captain for the NWSL Semifinal Playoff Friday night. The war hero from Stafford, Virginia saved the lives of 14 following a helicopter crash and was chosen to be the U.S. flag bearer for the Closing Ceremony of the Rio 2016 Paralympic Games.
As Honorary Captain, Brunais will join the Washington Spirit captain in the center circle for the coin toss in front of an expected sell-out crowd at the game to be held on Friday, September 30 at 8 p.m. at the Maryland SoccerPlex.
Staff Sergeant Brunais, who served in the 75th Ranger Regiment, retired in 2015 as a result of wounds he sustained from an IED blast. During his service, Brunais received the Soldier’s Medal after being credited for saving the lives of 14 men by pulling them out of a fire after a helicopter crash.
Fans can purchase tickets for the NWSL Semifinal match on Friday, September 30 at 8 p.m. at the Maryland SoccerPlex between the Washington Spirit and Chicago Red Stars at tickets.washingtonspirit.com or by calling 301-337-8579. The team also reminds any U.S. Military active duty member or veteran that they receive a discount on tickets if they call in and identify themselves as such.
