Spirit record-breaking rookie class continues to set NWSL standard with the team’s fifth Rookie of the Month honor this season
Washington, D.C. (11/07/2024) – Washington Spirit forward Makenna Morris has been named the NWSL Rookie of the Month, presented by Ally, for her performance during October and November competition, the league announced today. The honor, Morris’ first, represents the fifth time a Spirit player has earned the monthly award in 2024. Midfielder Croix Bethune previously won the award four times earlier this season.
Morris tallied three goals and an assist in four matches during October/November play. Of her four goal contributions, two came in game-winning fashion: her 43rd minute score against Louisville on October 13 and her 37th minute assist against North Carolina on November 2. Morris’ assist ended up delivering the Spirit the No. 2 seed in this month’s playoffs, guaranteeing the club home-field advantage.
With five goals and two assists across just 534 minutes of playing time, Morris finished her first regular season tied for the league lead in goals by a rookie (alongside teammate Bethune and Louisville’s Emma Sears). The 13th overall pick in this year’s NWSL Draft, Morris was part of a stellar rookie class with the Washington Spirit in 2024. All six Spirit rookies scored a goal this season, combining for 15 total scores and 12 assists.
The NWSL Rookie of the Month, presented by Ally award is selected each month of the regular season by the NWSL Media Association, a collection of writers that cover the league on a consistent basis, and the NWSL’s on-air broadcast talent.
