Spring is in full bloom and the community is blossoming. As the season progresses, both our Community Impact and Community Development teams are focused on being intentional and collaborative. We understand that in order to serve and show up for our community, we must first listen to their needs and be prepared to work together. Here’s a glimpse of what we did in April:

Community Advisory Discussion: Pride

A diverse group of LGBTQ+ community members smile for a photo.

The Spirit, SMYAL, the Mayor’s Office of LGBTQ+ Affairs and As You Are. hosted a discussion to explore what inclusive spaces for queer women, non-binary folks, and trans people look like around Pride. We brought together a small group of community members to help us build a better, more inclusive Pride matchday experience. We are excited to put best practices into use and continue the conversation with the broader community. Thank you to everyone who participated!

Fishing at Diamond Teague Park

Washington Spirit players in a variety of t-shirts and sweatshirts pose on a dock with fishing rods in hand. A mascot eagle lies in front.

To round out Earth Month, Anna Heilferty and the DC DOEE hosted a community fishing event at Diamond Teague Park near Audi Field. Spirit players Brittany Ratcliffe, Courtney Brown, Paige Metayer, Ashley Hatch, and Tara McKeown all managed to each reel in a fish while Lyza Bosselmann proved to be a pro catching two.

On the Run

A group of runners crosses the street with trees and rowhouses in the background.

The Spirit partnered with District Running Collective (DRC) and enjoyed an evening of sweat and vibes. We met at DRC HQ and had time to mingle, stretch and give a big send-off to a group of runners traveling to the London Marathon. With the weather getting warmer, we saw one of the largest gatherings in recent times drawing over 120 runners, both experienced and first timers. Running experience aside, the night was all about representing our city’s culture, energy and love for coming together. We ended our miles with a high-five tunnel and group chant: WE RUN DC, WE ARE DRC.
