USWNT Wins Concacaf Women’s Championship in Mexico

Washington, D.C., (07/19/2022) – Seven Washington Spirit players helped lead the U.S. Women’s National Team to the 2022 Concacaf Women’s Championship title Monday night by way of a 1-0 victory over Canada.

Among the Spirit representatives with the USWNT were forward Ashley Hatch, goalkeeper Aubrey Kingsbury, defender Kelley O’Hara, forward Trinity Rodman, forward Ashley Sanchez, defender Emily Sonnett and midfielder Andi Sullivan. In the national team’s seven matches during the month-long FIFA window, four Spirit players scored with O’Hara, Rodman, Sonnett and Sanchez all finding the back of the net. O’Hara’s score in the side’s second friendly against Colombia was her first with the national team in six years while Sonnett’s goal in the semifinal against Costa Rica was her first career international goal. Rodman and Sanchez each tallied their second and third international goals, respectively.

With the tournament win, the USWNT officially qualifies for the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris, having already qualified for next year’s World Cup in Australia and New Zealand with its win over Jamaica on July 7. In its seven competitions over the past month, the USWNT outscored opponents 18-0.

Upon returning from international duty, the Spirit’s seven USWNT players will have time to recover during the NWSL’s league-wide week off running from Monday, July 18 through Sunday, July 24. Following the conclusion of the break, the Spirit will head to North Carolina at full strength to take on the Courage on Friday, July 29.
