Boyds, Md., (6/29/20) – The Washington Spirit won their 2020 NWSL Challenge Cup opener on Saturday 2-1 against the Chicago Red Stars, with Spirit midfielder Rose Lavelle playing a stellar 65 minutes and being named Budweiser’s Woman of the Match.
We broke down some of Lavelle’s standout stats against the Red Stars ahead of the Spirit’s second game against the North Carolina Courage this Wednesday.
Lavelle attempted 22 passes during the match. Out of the 22 passes, Lavelle managed to successfully complete 18 of them, giving her an 81.8% success pass rate, averaging 30.5 passes per 90 minutes, with one of those being a key pass. Lavelle displayed the usual calm presence on the ball in the face of a Chicago midfield that included USWNT members Julie Ertz and Morgan Gautrat.
Included in her 81.8% success pass rate, Lavelle had a 70% passing accuracy on the offensive half of the field throughout her game, with a total of 36.4% of Lavelle’s passes advancing the ball into the Red Stars’ the defensive third of the field.
Lavelle took three shots during the game, and two out of those three shots were on target, which accounted for one-third of Washington’s total number of shots on target (6). Forward Ashley Hatch recorded three, and debutant Averie Collins recorded one.
Lavelle scored the Spirit’s first goal in the 2020 NWSL Challenge Cup after playing a crafty pass to Ashley Hatch to spring an attack, then jumping on the loose ball following a save from Chicago and USWNT keeper Alyssa Naeher. It was Lavelle’s second-ever goal for the Spirit, with her first coming against Washington’s next opponent, the North Carolina Courage, during the Spirit’s comeback 2-1 win over the defending champions in 2019.
