Boyds, MD., (6/17/19) – Washington Spirit forward Mallory Pugh made her first ever World Cup start playing a full 90 minutes as the US took first place in Group C defeating Chile 3-0.
Pugh had a good showing in her first World Cup start. While she didn’t score, Pugh recorded two shots, won two free kicks, and also assisted on a few chances for her US teammates that either missed the goal or were saved by Chilean keeper Christiane Endler.
The US had another dominant performance in front of an over-capacity crowd of 45,594. The Stars and Stripes controlled possession for 71% of the match and recorded nine shots on target opposed to Chile’s zero. Endler played a fantastic game and recorded six saves with the most impressive coming against a rocket sent in by Christen Press off a volley.
US captain Carli Lloyd also had a strong match. Lloyd scored two of the three goals in the match and in the process set a record with six straight FIFA World Cup games with a goal.
With this victory, the US secures a birth in the knockout stage. The US will take the pitch next on Thursday at 3 pm against Sweden. Spirit midfielder Rose Lavelle will likely return to the starting line up after resting this match.
