First-year NWSL player adds an extra year to her existing agreement

Washington, D.C. (06/20/2023) – Washington Spirit defender Gabrielle Carle and the club have agreed to a modified contract, the team announced today. The new contract has a three-year term with an option for the 2026 season and will take effect immediately. Carle signed her previous contract with the Spirit in December 2022.

“I couldn’t be happier to extend my time with the Spirit,” said Carle. “This is a very special environment and I am looking forward to continuing to help this club grow while further developing as an individual player.”

Carle has started every regular season match for the Spirit in 2023, totaling 957 minutes out of a possible 990 across the first half of this year’s campaign. The Canadian international has been a key part of a Spirit defending third that has conceded only ten goals so far this season, tied for the fewest in the NWSL at the halfway point. This season’s Spirit team has also earned three clean sheets through 11 regular season matches. Prior to her move to the NWSL, Carle spent her first professional season with Kristianstads DFF of the Damallsvenskan, the highest division of professional soccer in Sweden. In her first year, Carle tallied two goals and an assist.

“Gabby has had an immediate impact and it’s great that she already knows she wants to extend her time at this club,” said Head Coach Mark Parsons. “She has been an incredibly key part of our back line this season and we see her as an important piece of this team moving forward.”

Hailing from Lévis, Quebec, Carle attended Florida State University and played for Mark Krikorian’s Seminoles. Across five seasons in Tallahassee, Carle played in 100 matches while scoring eight goals and adding 14 assists. Carle also helped the Seminoles to two national championships in her final four seasons, being named to the 2018 College Cup All-Tournament Team and the 2021 All-ACC Second Team.
