Washington, D.C. (11/18/2022) – The Washington Spirit and Department of Energy & Environment (DOEE) will celebrate the first anniversary of the Spirit’s 2021 NWSL championship win on Sunday, November 20 with a community cleanup event in the District.
Taking place at Kingman and Heritage Islands on the Anacostia River, Spirit player and Sustainable DC Ambassador Anna Heilferty will lead her Spirit teammates, club staff and volunteers from Mayor Bowser’s office along with any fans who sign up for the event in removing waste and invasive species of plant life from the islands. This weekend’s cleanup will be the Spirit’s first initiative on the Anacostia since adopting the river in September.
“We chose to be a part of adopting the Anacostia because it aligned with our goals to not just be an engaged member of the DC community but be stewards of the city that has supported and embraced us, especially during our championship run,” said Spirit community relations manager Zoe Wulff. “We are grateful to be able to use the one-year anniversary of our championship to bring together our fans, players and staff to work toward continuing to better a cultural and historic DC icon in the Anacostia River.”
The club’s latest initiative will begin at 1 p.m. EST Sunday and continue until 3 p.m. Fans interested in participating in the cleanup at Kingman and Heritage Islands are encouraged to sign up for the event here.
Following Sunday’s event, the Spirit will continue its work on the Anacostia River with more cleanup initiatives and community events. You can stay up to date on future events here and by following the Spirit on Twitter and Instagram.
