In 2019, the Spirit and Reign FC drew in all three of their fixtures, with each match providing a different scoreline; 0-0, 1-1 and 2-2. In the Spirit’s 1-1 draw with the Reign on June 15, team captain Andi Sullivan scored her first-ever NWSL goal.
The Spirit added 11 new players to the roster over the 2020 offseason. The Spirit made five draft picks, with Ashley Sanchez, Natalie Jacobs, Averie Collins, Katie McClure, Kiaya McCullough all joining the team via the 2020 College Draft.
In addition, the Spirit added five players from overseas, with Jessie Scarpa, Jenna Hellstrom, Jaye Boissiere, Kumi Yokoyama and Brooke Hendrix. The Spirit also added undrafted free agent Katie Lund to the goalkeeping corps.
The Reign FC roster features two U.S. Women’s National Team World Cup stars in Megan Rapinoe and Allie Long as well as 2019 NWSL Rookie of the Year Bethany Balcer.
Rapinoe, one of the leading faces of the USWNT’s World Cup-winning run, won the Golden Ball award as the tournament’s top player. Since then, Rapinoe has also been named the FIFPro Women’s Best Player of 2019 and won the Ballon d’Or Feminine.
The Spirit will look to break their current attendance record of 19,871, which was set at Audi Field last season in a 2-1 victory over the Orlando Pride on August 24.
