United States U-23s coach B.J. Snow has named 21 professional players and two collegiate athletes to the 23-player roster for the 2019 Nordic Tournament in England. The Spirit will send two of their talented rookies, Sam Staab and Jordan DiBiasi, to compete.
This year’s team will look to repeat as the USWNT U-23s took home first place in the 2018 Nordic Tournament.
Head Coach Richie Burke commended the two players on their selection and praised their contributions to the team.
“We’re thrilled that Sam and Jord have been selected to represent the US U-23 squad to play in the Nordic Cup,” Burke said. “Both have thoroughly deserved the international call up and we’re pleased that their performances have not gone unnoticed… I believe this is just a stepping stone towards greater things for these two young Spirit players.”
Coach Burke also explained how Staab and DiBiasi’s selections are a testament to the quality of players that the Spirit added in the 2019 draft, saying that, “From the start, we knew we’d added quality players to our club through the 2019 draft.”
Staab, a 22-year-old defender from San Diego, Calif. and Clemson University, is already an instrumental part of the Spirit’s defense.
Staab has started 16 games for the Spirit and played over 1400 minutes. The 2019 4th overall pick in the NWSL draft also started all three games in the 2018 Nordic tournament and scored the championship-clinching goal for the U.S. U-23 Women’s National Team. While at Clemson, Staab also was named ACC Defensive Player of the Year in her senior season.
Midfielder DiBiasi, a 22-year-old playmaker from Highlands Ranch, Colo. and Stanford University, was the third pick in the 2019 NWSL draft.
DiBiasi was expected to have a big impact and has already delivered as one of the leading scorers for the Spirit with four goals. DiBiasi has started 16 games for Washington and has made appearances for the U.S U-23 Women’s National Team since 2017.
The U.S. will face Norway on August 28, England on August 30 and Sweden on September 2. All of the matches will be played at Loughborough University in Loughborough, England.
