The Washington Spirit announced today that the club has acquired former German International midfielder Kerstin Garefrekes on loan from FFC Frankfurt for the remainder of the 2014 NWSL season.

“We are very grateful for Frankfurt’s support to help make this happen,” Spirit general manager and coach Mark Parsons said. “We are looking forward to having someone with her international experience and leadership for the rest of the year.”

Garefrekes was second in goals in the Frauen-Bundesliga this season, leading her team to the league final where they fell to Champions League winners Wolfsburg. Since 2004, she has helped Frankfurt win a Bundesliga title, three German Cup titles and a Champions League title, recording an impressive 151 goals in 201 appearances.

Making her debut for the German National Team in 2001 at the age of 22, she has had a long and successful career for her country, accumulating 43 goals in 130 appearances. In addition to her personal achievements, she helped Germany win the 2003 and 2007 FIFA Women’s World Cup and the 2005 and 2009 European Championship.

The 34-year-old will look to make her Spirit debut sometime in the next seven to 10 days.
