Washington, D.C. (09/13/2026) – The Washington Spirit took a tough loss at home Sunday afternoon, falling 0-3 to Boston Legacy FC at Audi Field. After a scoreless match up until the 81st minute, Boston found the back of the net three times in the final minutes to lock up the result.
The sunny mid-day match started strong for the Spirit. The team found quick success using Trinity Rodman’s gritty pace to get behind Legacy FC defenders and set up a few close calls. The Spirit defending third also began the match locked in, not letting Boston connect in its final third.
After a foul against Rodman in the 20th minute, the intensity between the two teams cranked up. Boston almost put away a free kick shortly after, but defender Gabby Carle got her foot on the ball at the last second. Rosemonde Kouassi flew up the right side of the field and sent a cross to a waiting Rodman, but Boston goalkeeper Casey Murphy was able to snatch it out of the air.
The physical battle continued with Hal Hershfelt earning a yellow card after a tough one-on-one down the middle of the field. Minutes later in a similar dual, Monique Ngock collected her own yellow card. The half ended with more yellow cards than shots on goal as both teams accumulated two cards each.
To kick off the second half, the quality of play for both teams went up. In the 50th minute, Sandy MacIver made a diving save that turned into a corner, but Legacy FC was unable to convert. Suddenly Boston controlled most of the possession, arriving at balls before the Spirit.
However, the Spirit hung in the match. After a series of attacks, Sofia Cantore earned a corner in the 57th minute, and Washington heads fought for the ball. Claudia Martínez subbed on the pitch for Ngock in the 61st minute, bringing her into the midfield. Kouassi steamed ahead and started a chain reaction of offensive play for the Spirit. After Kouassi’s shot from outside the 18-yard box, the Spirit was able to fight its way back into the box.
Just before the second hydration break, Ashley Hatch made her way into the game to replace Kouassi up top. Soon after, another yellow card was earned by Martínez, bringing the game’s total to five yellow cards.
After battling through multiple tackles, Aïssata Traoré scored in the 81st minute from the top of the box. Legacy FC continued to barrel down the field and kept majority possession of the ball. MacIver came up with another big save in the 84th minute after Amanda Gutierres got a good look at goal.
Heading into the final minutes of the match, Madison Haugen came in for Paige Metayer and Tamara Bolt for Sofia Cantore in hopes of sparking an offensive surge. Rodman had a great look in the 88th minute, but Murphy denied.
In the fourth minute of stoppage, MacIver was caught off her line, and Gutierres scored from deep. Following the goal, Legacy FC forced another breakdown from the Spirit, and Gutierres scored again off a cross from Boston defender Lilly Reale to bring the match to its final scoreline.
Next up, the Spirit will travel for its first meeting of the season with Chicago Stars FC on Sunday, September 20. Kicking off at 5 p.m. EDT, the match will air on ESPN.
