Spirit looks for win #12 of the season; club will celebrate diverse DC culture at Audi Field
Washington, D.C. (08/01/2026) – The Washington Spirit will host the North Carolina Courage on Saturday as the team looks for its 12th win of the season. Kicking off at 6:30 p.m. EDT, the match will feature a celebration of diverse DC culture around Audi Field as part of the club’s Spirit Worldwide: Culture Night theme.
Playing its third home match in three weeks, Washington looks to win its 12th match in the last 15 regular season contests and stay amongst the league’s best near the top of the table. The match will air on ION for Spirit fans unable to attend. Following this weekend, the Spirit will hit the road for an away match against Angel City FC on August 16.
On the Pitch
Saturday night’s matchup between the Spirit and Courage will be the 30th all-time meeting between the sides. Though Washington trails in the series with an 8-16-5 record, it has gone 8-3-3 across the last 14 head-to-head regular season and playoff matchups. Washington took a decisive 3-1 win in the Courage’s last visit to DC before earning a 2-0 shutout victory on the road in Cary last month behind goals from Leicy Santos and Trinity Rodman.
This weekend’s match will be the Spirit’s ninth home contest of the season as the side currently holds a 5-2-1 record at Audi Field this year. Washington has outscored opponents 11-5 in DC so far this season and tallied three shutouts at home. Overall, the Spirit has won 11 of its last 14 regular season matches and sits second on the NWSL table, just one point off first.
Washington is led in the attack by star forward and recently named NWSL Player of the Month Trinity Rodman whose eight goals and five assists are each the most on the team. With her next goal, Rodman will set a new single-season career high. In the defending third, defender Tara Rudd and goalkeeper Sandy MacIver have anchored the team, having both played every minute of the regular season thus far. Both players were also recently named to the NWSL’s Best XI of the Month for July. With eight clean sheets so far this regular season, the Spirit looks to keep up its strong recent defensive form.
Washington will be without several key players for the fourth straight match this weekend as the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations continues. Midfielder Deborah Abiodun, forward Gift Monday and Nigeria recently reached the quarterfinals of the tournament while forward Rosemonde Kouassi and Ivory Coast did the same. Additionally, recently signed Algerian midfielder Mélissa Bethi and Cameroonian midfielder Monique Ngock have also helped their nations advance to the knockout stage and will report to DC after their runs at the tournament. Spirit players have tallied four goal contributions through the group stage at the tournament in Morocco.
North Carolina has exploded offensively as of late. Following an uncharacteristic three-match losing streak in which the side was outscored 9-1, the Courage has put together back-to-back strong performances. The side took a decisive 5-0 home win over Orlando last weekend before earning an impressive 2-0 away win at altitude against Denver earlier this week. In the process, the Courage became the first team to outscore opponents by seven or more across a two-match stretch this season.
The Courage is led in scoring by former Spirit midfielder Ashley Sanchez, who has tallied ten goals through 17 matches and already doubled her former single season career high. Sanchez is second in the NWSL Golden Boot race, trailing only Orlando’s Barbra Banda. Forward Evelyn Ijeh is second on the team with seven goals, including a hat trick in last weekend’s home win. North Carolina’s 28 goals for have come largely in the second half, with 19 occurring in the final 45 and eight of those in the final 15 minutes of action.
North Carolina’s strong attacking performance over the past two matches has taken the side ahead of the Spirit in several attacking categories on the season. The Courage leads Washington in goals, assists, shots and total big chances thanks to its seven-goal week. The Spirit does lead in rate of possession so look for the home team to lean on its ability to control the pace of play as it tries to limit threats from the Courage this weekend.
Following Sunday’s action, the Spirit will head out west to take on Angel City FC on Sunday, August 16. North Carolina will return home after a lengthy away stretch, hosting the Houston Dash next weekend.
Around the Stadium
Saturday night’s theme will be Spirit Worldwide: Culture Night in celebration of DC’s vibrant diversity. As fans arrive tomorrow evening, they will be greeted with a traditional Chinese dance performance by northern Virginia-based Choy Wun Lion Dance Troupe. Upon entry to the stadium, fans will receive a special giveaway matching the theme: a Spirit-branded passport. With representatives of many different DC embassies tabling around the concourse, fans will be able to fill their passports with country-specific stickers as they visit each stop to learn more about their international neighbors.
Inside Gate A, local Latin band Pa’ Gozar will perform with salsa dancers on the Spirit Stage until the match kicks off. Halftime will see another exciting performance as dynamic Latin pop artist Jason Cerda and the Spirit Crew show out on the pitch. Cerda recently featured the Washington Spirit in the music video for his song “Golazo” filmed at Audi Field earlier this summer.
Spiritville will continue to feature activations that fans will be sure to love on Saturday night. In addition to fan-favorites like the temporary airbrush tattoo station, facepainting station, poster-making station and yard games, Spiritville will feature even more photo areas for fans to immortalize their visits to Audi Field including the all-new metro set.
The concourse will also feature several new concessions options that debuted at the season opener earlier this year. Around the southeast corner of the stadium will be food truck row with four unique food truck options to provide even more variety on matchday. In addition to a new pizza stand at the stadium, the north concourse will be home to a new vegan vending machine for inclusive options.
The national anthem will be performed by Michael Urgel tomorrow night as the DC Fire color guard presents the flags alongside them. Black Assets will also perform Lift Every Voice and Sing before kickoff.
