Tanner’s contract will be made available on the NWSL waiver wire

Washington, D.C. (04/08/2024) – The Washington Spirit has waived forward Riley Tanner, the club announced today. Tanner’s NWSL playing rights will be made available to the other 13 clubs later today. If not picked up there, she will be eligible for the discovery process.

“Riley has been a valuable part of this club and we greatly appreciate her contributions as a teammate and a professional,” said President of Soccer Operations/General Manager Mark Krikorian. “We wish her the best as she continues her career.”

Tanner appeared in two 2023 UKG NWSL Challenge Cup matches for the Spirit during her first season. She recorded an assist in her NWSL debut on May 10 against Orlando and earned her first-ever NWSL start on June 14 against North Carolina. At the international level, Tanner has extensive experience with the Panama Women’s National Team, having appeared at the side’s first-ever FIFA Women’s World Cup last summer in Australia.

Originally from Caledonia, Michigan, Tanner was drafted by the Spirit with the 30th overall pick out of Alabama in the 2023 NWSL Draft. Tanner transferred to the Tuscaloosa school after three years at South Carolina. In two seasons with the Crimson Tide, she tallied eight goals and 11 assists across 45 appearances. Tanner’s final season saw her earn Second Team All-SEC honors.
