‘Blackout’ kit and ‘Spotlight’ kit represent the club’s forward approach to preeminence

Washington, D.C. (02/27/2024) – The Washington Spirit unveiled the club’s two groundbreaking new kits designed by Nike to be worn throughout the 2024 season today. The kits, known as the Blackout and Spotlight respectively, represent the journey of the club under majority owner Michele Kang’s visionary leadership. Kang has been vocal in her mission to grow the Washington Spirit into the world’s preeminent sports organization, and innovation has been a central theme from the club’s current branding journey to the investment in fem tech to train females as females and recruiting one of the world’s best head coaches.

The Blackout kit is inspired by the columns and architecture found throughout the region. The convergence of patterns on the tonal grey and black graphic is reflective of bridging the communities within DC, Maryland and Virginia. This uniform will be the Spirit’s primary set, being worn predominantly at home in 2024 and inspiring fans to Blackout Audi with sellout attendances throughout the season.

Perhaps most notably this season, the club introduces a vibrant yellow as one of its main colors. Featured on the Spotlight kit, yellow is a nod to the club’s trailblazing spirit and a hint of the club’s forthcoming new brand positioning in 2025. As Washington’s secondary kit, the Spotlight set will be worn predominantly on the road in 2024.

“These kits are inspired by Michele’s vision. They represent what we want to embody as a club on and off the pitch – trailblazing, energy and dominating,” said Washington Spirit COO Theresa McDonnell. “The players will look commanding in black at home and will be unmissable in bright yellow on the road.”

The Washington Spirit began a new era under the leadership of Kang. The organization is in the midst of a full rebrand set to debut in 2025. This journey began last season when the club pivoted with a simplified look to a black, white and chrome. This season’s refresh includes the addition of yellow giving a nod at what’s to come next season.

“I love the energy of the Spotlight kit and the power of the Blackout kit,” said seventh-year Spirit midfielder Andi Sullivan. “I can’t wait to wear these kits and bring those elements to the field. I hope the fans are as excited as us to finally see these kits!”

The Spirit is gearing up to kick off its 2024 season home schedule on Saturday, March 23 at 7:30 p.m. against one of the NWSL’s new expansion clubs Bay FC. Fans can purchase tickets for the home opener here. Season memberships including full season, half season and mini plans are available here and individual match tickets here.
