Evanston, Ill. (09/20/2026) – The Washington Spirit earned a 3-0 road win against Chicago Stars FC in the wind and rain on Sunday evening. With its tenth shutout performance of the season, the Spirit remains in second place on the NWSL table with five matches left to play in the regular season.
The Spirit started the match on the front foot, finding the back of the net less than seven minutes in. Midfielder Hal Hershfelt fed forward Trinity Rodman with a leading pass into the final third and Rodman did the rest. The forward sent her shot past Chicago goalkeeper Alyssa Naeher for the early 1-0 lead and her 11th goal of the season as Hershfelt tallied her first assist of the year.
Washington was able to keep the ball in Stars FC’s defending third, collecting four more shots over the next 20 minutes, including another on target from Rodman that was saved out for a corner by Naeher. On the ensuring corner kick, the Spirit drew a penalty kick on a Chicago handball in the box. Midfielder Andi Sullivan stepped up to the spot and put away her attempt for the 2-0 lead and her first regular season goal since May 2024.
Coming out of the locker rooms for the second half, the Spirit made two substitutions: forward Ashley Hatch replaced Rosemonde Kouassi and Paige Metayer came on for defender Lucia Di Guglielmo, who was making her first appearance since mid-July. Washington earned a free kick from just outside the Chicago box in the 50th minute and defender Tara Rudd sent a solid attempt just wide of the goal.
Washington made two more substitutions in the 75th minute after midfielder Mélissa Bethi went down with an injury. Forward Tamara Bolt replaced Bethi while midfielder Monique Ngock came on for Sullivan. The Spirit added to its lead in the 85th minute when Rodman found Bolt in the box for a header. Bolt sent her shot past Naeher for her first career NWSL goal and solidified Washington’s win at 3-0.
With the shutout, goalkeeper Sandy MacIver set a new club single season record with her tenth clean sheet of the year. With her match-winning goal, Rodman tied the league single season record for most game-winning goal contributions at nine. With the win, the Spirit remains second on the league table heading into the final five matches of the regular season.
Next up, the Spirit will return home for a meeting with Angel City FC on Saturday, September 26. Kicking off at 6:30 p.m. EDT, the match will air on ION.
