Boyds, Md., (12/09/20) – The Washington Spirit have re-signed defender Natalie Jacobs to a new two-year contract. Jacobs is the ninth player to re-sign with the Spirit this offseason and brings the current list of players under contract to 14.

Spirit Head Coach Richie Burke had this to say about Jacobs: After an eventful rookie year, one in which this talented newcomer to the league played in multiple roles for our club, I’m delighted to be able to include Natalie Jacobs on our 2021 roster. Getting her on board with a multi-year deal indicates that our club and our entire Technical Staff sees Nat as a player that has huge upside, and we are thrilled to have her back for the next few years. She has a great future in this league and we are committed to helping her realize her full potential at the Spirit.”

Jacobs joined the Spirit during the 2020 NWSL College Draft, where she was drafted with the 13th-overall pick. In her rookie season with Washington, Jacobs played in a total of seven games, starting five and recording 397 minutes. The right-back contributed to the Spirit’s defensive success with 10 clearances and forced 12 interceptions. While Jacobs primarily operated as the team’s right back, she has the versatility to function in the midfield or in the attack.

The Notre Dame and Southern California product was a major asset for both schools during her collegiate career. During her two seasons at Notre Dame, Jacobs led the team in goals (13), minutes (1,745), game-winning goals (4) and assists (7) in 2017 and was an ACC All-Freshman Team selection in 2015. After transferring to the University of Southern California, Jacobs played in all 45 games and started 38 over the course of two seasons with the Trojans.

Spirit CEO and Director of Sporting Operations Larry Best had this to say on the re-signing: “Natalie had a successful rookie campaign that showed her versatility by being challenged to play multiple positions and she adapted to every challenge the staff placed on her.  We see a bright future for Natalie and look forward to her return for year two.”
