Boyds, Md., (10/21/19) – Washington Spirit and United States Women’s National Team midfielder Rose Lavelle has been named to the 30-person shortlist for France Football’s Ballon d’Or award. Lavelle had a breakout year in 2019, most notably starring in a USWNT squad that took home their second-consecutive World Cup title last summer.
Lavelle joins USWNT teammates Megan Rapinoe, Alex Morgan and Tobin Heath as the US earned four total nominations, the most by any country. The Ballon d’Or Feminin enters its second year of existence, with Ada Hegerberg being the first-ever winner of the award in 2018.

The nomination adds to a trophy-laden year for the midfielder as Lavelle also won the Bronze Ball for her play in this year’s FIFA Women’s World Cup. Lavelle scored three goals in the tournament, including the game-sealing goal in the United States’ final against the Netherlands. Lavelle appeared in 6 matches at the World Cup, playing a total of 427 minutes over the course of the tournament.
In addition to her Ballon d’Or nomination and Bronze Ball win, Lavelle was named to the FIFPRO Women’s Best XI earlier this year at FIFA’s “The Best” award ceremony in Milan.
The 2019 Ballon d’Or awards ceremony will take place at the Theatre Du Chatelet in Paris on Monday, December 2.
