Boyds, Md. (Feb. 20, 2019) – Washington Spirit forward Cheyna Matthews has re-joined the Jamaican national team for a set of two friendlies against Chile before the 2019 FIFA Women’s World Cup.
Matthews attended camp with Jamaica for the first time in her career in January. She joins squad at a crucial time in their history, as the Reggae Girlz will be making their first-ever World Cup appearance this summer.
The former NWSL College Draft 1st round pick will be training alongside Spirit Reserves player Chiny Asher, who established herself in the senior squad during the CONCACAF Women’s Championship last fall, when Jamaica sealed their placement in the World Cup.
Jamaica is the first-ever Caribbean country to qualify for the Women’s World Cup, and they will join Australia, Brazil and Italy in Group C this summer.
