Boyds, MD (Sept. 22, 2017) – The Washington Spirit will host the Boston Breakers on Saturday night at the Maryland SoccerPlex for their third and final match-up of the 2017 NWSL season.
Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. and gates open at 6 p.m. The first 500 fans to enter the stadium will receive ‘Kindness’ bracelets donated by lifestyle brand La Cle in celebration of the Washington Spirit Night of Kindness. [+More Info]
Washington is unbeaten in its past four home games against Boston, earning a win and three draws. In their most recent match-up at the SoccerPlex back on August 12, the teams played to a 2-2 draw, both scoring a goal in each half. In their first meeting of the season on July 1 in Boston, the Breakers notched a 1-0 clean sheet win.
Saturday’s game will be the first in nearly two weeks for both Washington and Boston, coming out of a league-wide international break. The Spirit will seek a second straight win after a 2-1 comeback effort on the road against Sky Blue FC in its most recent game on September 10.
“We’re all looking forward to playing in front of our great fans and Spirit Squadron here at the SoccerPlex,” said Spirit head coach and general manager Jim Gabarra. “We’ll work to maintain the momentum we have coming out of the Sky Blue game.”
Spirit defender Whitney Church had a career game against Sky Blue, netting her first NWSL goal and anchoring the back line with seven interceptions, four clearances, three blocks and two tackles, garnering NWSL Player of the Week honors. She also combined with Spirit goalkeeper DiDi Haracic to earn NWSL Save of the Week for a triple save in stoppage time to preserve the win.
Haracic, who recorded a career high seven saves against Sky Blue, will look to continue the positive defensive momentum along with the Spirit back line against Boston on Saturday. Canadian international defender Shelina Zadorsky enters the weekend with a team-high 88 interceptions, while Church leads the Spirit with 19 blocked shots.
On the offensive side, Havana Solaun is tied with Cheyna Williams for the team lead in goals with five, and is tied with Nigerian international Francisca Ordega for the lead in assists with three.
U.S. Women’s National Team forward Mallory Pugh is back with the club after recording her sixth career international goal and 11th assist in a friendly against New Zealand on Tuesday night in Cincinnati. She is tied with Ordega for second on the Spirit with four goals this season, just 14 games into her pro career.
On Boston’s side, Canadian international Adriana Leon leads the attack with five goals and five assists on the season. Natasha Dowie and Rosie White area close behind with four goals each.
The Breakers are also expected to have 2017 NWSL College Draft No. 1 pick and U.S. international Rose Lavelle back in the lineup. Lavelle has two goal and one assist in her first 10 NWSL appearances.
Following this weekend’s tilt with Boston, the Spirit will close out the season on Saturday, Sept. 30 at home against Seattle Reign FC. [TICKETS]
