Washington, D.C. (08/30/2026) – The Washington Spirit earned a hard-fought 1-0 win over Bay FC in front of 16,817 strong at Audi Field on Sunday afternoon. Snapping a four-game winless streak, the Spirit maintained its position in second place on the NWSL table heading into September.
After a Spirit turnover in its final third and Bay FC shot on target that was saved in the opening minutes, neither side was able to find an early advantage. Fifteen minutes in, the Spirit and Bay FC were locked in an even battle, with both sides showing intent in attack and creating occasional opportunities on the break.
In the 18th minute, Paige Metayer nearly found the back of the net with a cheeky backheel shot, but goalkeeper Jordan Silkowitz denied it. Shortly after, Bay FC had a quick breakaway, but Spirit keeper Sandy MacIver came off her line, dove and collected the ball.
As the clock neared 30 minutes, MacIver continued to anchor the Spirit defending third in goal. In the 38th minute, MacIver made a diving stop inside the six-yard box, blocking the ball out for a corner. Two minutes later, Bay FC had another strong look at goal as Karlie Lema nearly finished from close-range but her shot hit the post, prompting a Spirit clearance.
Just before stoppage time, forward Ashley Hatch went down injured just outside of the Bay FC box and was forced to leave the match. Midfielder Mélissa Bethi came on in the 45th minute, making her NWSL debut in the process.
Four minutes later, after a quick counter, forward Sofia Cantore found Trinity Rodman on the left wing with a through ball. Rodman took advantage of the space, beat her defender into the box and fired high, sending the ball off the crossbar and down toward the goal line. Metayer followed the shot and bumped the ball into the back of the net with her body for the 1-0 Spirit lead.
Shortly into the second half, defender Kate Wiesner went down with an injury and forward Tamara Bolt subbed on to replace her. In the 52nd minute, defender Esme Morgan played a lofted ball down the left wing for Bethi. Bethi earned a corner to continue the Spirit attack but Bay FC thwarted the threat. In return, Bay FC worked its way up the field, but defender Jenna Nighswonger missed an attempt in the box. Three minutes later, a shot from Bay FC’s Alex Pfeiffer was saved by MacIver with a dive to the left.
In the 67th minute, MacIver made another save, tipping the ball off the crossbar. Bay FC continued to work its way into the Spirit’s 18-yard box but was unable to break through. Forward Gift Monday came on for Cantore in the 68th minute, followed by forward Racheal Kundananji for Alex Pfeiffer. Midfielder Monique Ngock came on for Andi Sullivan as well, making her NWSL debut.
In the 77th minute, Bolt raced down the right sideline and earned a corner, but Silkowitz denied the chance. While taking on multiple defenders, Monday found her way into the box and earned a corner off a blocked shot, but Silkowitz made another stop. Monday continued to put herself in good position to make things difficult for Bay FC’s back line.
In the 87th minute, Rodman made a crucial tackle on the edge of the Spirit’s box and took off with the ball. After the play, Bay FC’s Maddie Moreau was issued a yellow card for a foul. Managing the game well, Rodman continued to draw fouls in the attacking third.
After 90 minutes of play, seven minutes of stoppage time were added to the clock. Washington did a good job of maintaining possession, keeping the ball out of harm’s way. In the final minutes, Rodman was able to possess the ball and take it to the sideline and corner in the attacking third to run time off the clock multiple times. At the final whistle, Washington earned three points for the first time in a month and vaulted itself back up to second place on the league table.
Next up, the Spirit will hit the road for its last west coast match of the regular season, taking on Portland Thorns FC on Sunday, September 6. Kicking off at 4 p.m. EDT, the match will air on CBS.
