Bethi, Algeria and Ngock, Cameroon lock up spots in next summer’s World Cup
Washington, D.C. (08/11/2026) – Incoming Washington Spirit midfielders Mélissa Bethi and Monique Ngock helped their national teams qualify for next summer’s FIFA Women’s World Cup with wins in the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) quarterfinal round last weekend. Bethi and Algeria took down Ivory Coast 2-1 while Ngock and Cameroon topped Nigeria 1-0.
Bethi was once again in Algeria’s starting lineup for the side’s WAFCON quarterfinal match on Saturday, playing the full 90 minutes as her team came from behind in the second half to defeat Ivory Coast and advance to take on Malawi in the semifinal round. With the win, Algeria locked up its spot in the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup, set to kick off next June in Brazil. This will be Algeria’s first-ever appearance at a Women’s World Cup.
Ngock also played a full 90 minutes as Cameroon took down ten-time WAFCON champion Nigeria by a 1-0 score in the quarterfinal round to advance. The Indomitable Lionesses will face Morocco in the semifinal round of this summer’s WAFCON tournament this week and will take the pitch at their third-ever Women’s World Cup next summer in Brazil.
Midfielder Deborah Abiodun and forward Gift Monday both earned the start for Nigeria in their quarterfinal matchup with Cameroon. Abiodun played a full 90 while Monday saw 62 minutes of action. Despite taking a 0-1 loss, the Super Falcons still have a chance to qualify for the upcoming World Cup and will take on South Africa this week to earn a spot in this fall’s inter-confederation play-offs. Forward Rosemonde Kouassi did not appear for Ivory Coast in the side’s quarterfinal loss to Algeria and the team will face off with Ghana this week in the hopes of advancing to the inter-confederation play-offs later this year.
The Spirit will take the pitch at Audi Field next on Sunday, August 23 when it takes on the Orlando Pride. Kicking off at 4 p.m. EDT, the match’s theme will be Love is Loud: Pride. Tickets are available at WashingtonSpirit.com/tickets.
