Mélissa Bethi scores, Rosemonde Kouassi and Monique Ngock provide assists to open tournament
Washington, D.C. (07/30/2026) – Five Washington Spirit players were in action during the first matchday of the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco this week with three providing goal contributions to help their teams to opening wins.
Midfielder Mélissa Bethi scored Algeria’s second goal in a 2-0 win over Senegal on Sunday. Bethi’s full 90 performance helped Algeria jump into favorable position in Group A. During Group B play, forward Rosemonde Kouassi provided the match-winning assist for Ivory Coast against defender Alimata Bélem and Burkina Faso. Both Kouassi and Bélem played 90 minutes for their respective sides as well.
With Nigeria, midfielder Deborah Abiodun subbed on late in the second half and helped the Super Falcons during a strong comeback attempt though the team came up short against Malawi. Finally, midfielder Monique Ngock and Cameroon took a 2-1 win over Mali with Ngock assisting the Indomitable Lionesses’ opening goal.
The Spirit’s six players at this summer’s WAFCON will be back in action for their second of three group stage matches over the next four days. The Spirit will take the pitch at Audi Field again this weekend when it takes on San Diego Wave FC. Kicking off at 4 p.m. EDT on Sunday, August 2, the match will be Washington’s annual Cancer Awareness Day. Tickets are available at WashingtonSpirit.com/tickets.
