Panama will face Jamaica in final Concacaf W Gold Cup qualifier

Washington, D.C. (11/21/2023) – Washington Spirit first-year midfielder Riley Tanner has been called up to the Panama Women’s National Football Team for the side’s final 2023 Road to W Gold Cup match, the Panamanian Football Federation announced today. This fall’s contests have served as qualifying matches for the 2024 W Gold Cup.

Panama will face Jamaica on Wednesday, November 29 at 7 p.m. EST with the chance to officially clinch a spot in next year’s Concacaf W Gold Cup. The match will take place at National Stadium in Kingston, Jamaica.

Tanner, the 30th overall pick in the 2023 NWSL Draft, is being called up to the Panama National team for the seventh time. This summer, Tanner represented Panama at the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup in Australia and New Zealand. She also helped the team qualify for its first-ever appearance in the Women’s World Cup earlier this year during February’s Play-Off Tournament. Tanner scored her first international goal in the semifinal of the tournament against Papua New Guinea.

This season, Tanner appeared in two 2023 UKG NWSL Challenge Cup matches for the Spirit in 2023, recording an assist in her NWSL debut on May 10 against Orlando and earning her first-ever NWSL start on June 14 against North Carolina.

Prior to joining the Spirit, Tanner played collegiately at the University of South Carolina before transferring to the University of Alabama. In 2019, she became the first Lady Gamecock to score in three straight NCAA Tournament games. In her final season of college soccer, Tanner was named a Second Team All-SEC member with Alabama. There, she finished her career third in all-time single season game-winning goals (3) and fourth in all-time single-season assists (8).

The Spirit will be back in action in 2024 with all home matches once again being played at Audi Field. In total, Washington hosted almost 120,000 fans across the club’s 11 regular season home matches in 2023, averaging nearly 11,000 in attendance per home match. Fans can secure their tickets to all home matches next season with a season membership.
